Biking Munich

Wednesday morning.  The kids were in school and the day was perfect for a bike ride.  M, C and I decided that it was the perfect time for a guided bike tour of the city we now call home.  We met our guide just under the toy museum in Marienplatz (where the Glockenspiel is) and after a few preliminary words about how Munich became a seat of power and influence back in the day, we moved on to the rise of power of the Royal Family, the loss of their power and the rise and fall of the Third Reich.  It was like a history class on wheels which I find I like much more than traditional history class.  We were enthralled with the stories about our adopted hometown and even after seeing the same sights many times in my daily life it was nice to see them in their true context.
If you are ever in Munich, I highly recommend taking one of the bike tours if the weather is good.

The World Famous Haufbrauhaus.

Munich has such gorgeous restaurants everywhere you look.

The Opera house

Odeonsplatz and the statue of Theresa (Queen of Bavaria in the 1800's)

Theatinerkirche, started in 1663 as an homage to the long-awaited crown prince Max Emanuel.

The new Documentation Center - a must visit.

The office Hitler actually worked in is in the upper left corner.

After a lot of heavy history, it was time for a fun lunch in the Chinesischer Turm Biergarten.

After lunch, we watched the surfers, got a bit more of a history lesson and ended our day where we started at the Marienplatz.  All in all, a great way to spend a sunny afternoon.
